Supplications from the Qur’an and Sunnah recommended for Qunūt al‑Witr - Shaikh Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbād
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful,
the Most Compassionate.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the
worlds. May Allah send His prayers, peace, and blessings upon His servant and
Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his companions.
To proceed: Some imams, at the conclusion
of the Tarāwīḥ and Tahajjud prayers in the month of Ramadan, recite
supplications in the Qunūt of Witr that contain a degree of affectation. Some
recite them with special melodies or rhymed phrases. Since safety and
correctness lie in supplications taken from the Qur’an and the authentic
Sunnah, it is necessary to give attention and care to these authentic
supplications. I have therefore decided to present in this article a collection
of supplications from the Qur’an and Sunnah that are authentically established
from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as a reminder to the
imams of the masajid to use them in the Qunūt of Witr. They are as follows:
One begins with the transmitted
supplication that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught to al‑Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with them
both), where he said:
Allāhumma ihdinī fīman hadayta (O Allah,
guide me among those You have guided),
wa ʿāfinī fīman ʿāfayta (and grant me well‑being among those You have granted
well‑being),
wa tawallanī fīman tawallayta (and take me into Your care among those You have
taken into Your care),
wa bārik lī fīmā aʿṭayta (and bless for me what You have given),
wa qinī sharra mā qaḍayta (and protect me from the evil of what You have
decreed),
innaka taqḍī wa lā yuqḍā ʿalayk (for indeed You decree and none can decree over
You),
innahu lā yadhillu man wālayta (indeed, none is humiliated whom You befriend),
wa lā yaʿizzu man ʿādayta (and none is honored whom You oppose),
tabārakta rabbanā wa taʿālayta (Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted).
And the imams recite it in the plural
form:
Allāhumma ihdinā fīman hadayta, wa ʿāfinā fīman ʿāfayta, wa tawallanā fīman
tawallayta, wa bārik lanā fīmā aʿṭayta, wa qinā sharra mā qaḍayta, innaka taqḍī
wa lā yuqḍā ʿalayk, innahu lā yadhillu man wālayta, wa lā yaʿizzu man ʿādayta,
tabārakta rabbanā wa taʿālayta.
O Allah, guide us among those You have guided; grant us well‑being among those
You have granted well‑being; take us into Your care among those You have taken
into Your care; bless for us what You have given; and protect us from the evil
of what You have decreed. Indeed, You decree and none can decree over You.
Indeed, none is humiliated whom You befriend, and none is honored whom You
oppose. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted.
}رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ.{
Rabbana taqabbal minnā innaka anta as‑samīʿu
al‑ʿalīm.
Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.
Wa tub ʿalaynā innaka anta at‑tawwābu ar‑raḥīm.
And turn to us in mercy. Indeed, You are the Accepter of Repentance, the
Merciful.
Rabbana ātinā fī‑d‑dunyā ḥasanah wa fī‑l‑ākhirah ḥasanah wa qinā ʿadhāba‑n‑nār.
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us
from the punishment of the Fire.
Rabbana lā tuʾākhidhnā in nasīnā aw akhṭa’nā; rabbana wa lā taḥmil ʿalaynā iṣran kamā ḥamaltahu ʿalā alladhīna min qablina; rabbana wa lā tuḥammilnā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bih; waʿfu ʿannā wa‑ighfir lanā wa‑irḥamnā; anta mawlānā fa‑nṣurnā ʿalā al‑qawmi al‑kāfirīn.
Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord,
do not place upon us a burden like that which You placed upon those before us.
Our Lord, do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and
have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so grant us victory over the
disbelieving people.
Rabbana lā tuzigh qulūbanā baʿda idh hadaytanā wa hab lanā min ladunka raḥmah;
innaka anta al‑wahhāb.
Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us
mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower.
Rabbana innanā āmannā fa‑ighfir lanā dhunūbanā wa qinā ʿadhāba‑n‑nār.
Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from
the punishment of the Fire.
Rabbana āmannā bimā anzalta wa‑ittabaʿnā ar‑rasūl fa‑uktubnā maʿa ash‑shāhidīn.
Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and we have followed the
Messenger, so record us among the witnesses.
Rabbana innanā samiʿnā munādiyyan yunādī lil‑īmān an āminū birabbikum fa‑āmannā;
rabbana fa‑ighfir lanā dhunūbanā wa kaffir ʿannā sayyiātinā wa tawaffanā maʿa
al‑abrār; rabbana wa ātinā mā waʿadtanā ʿalā rusulika wa lā tukhzinā yawma al‑qiyāmah;
innaka lā tukhlifu al‑mīʿād.
Our Lord, we have heard a caller calling to faith, “Believe in your Lord,” and
we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, remove from us our misdeeds,
and cause us to die with the righteous. Our Lord, grant us what You promised us
through Your messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection.
Indeed, You do not fail in Your promise.
Rabbana ẓalamnā anfusanā wa in lam taghfir lanā wa tarḥamnā lanakūnanna mina al‑khāsirīn.
Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have
mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.
Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people.
Anta waliyyunā fa‑ighfir lanā wa‑irḥamnā wa anta khayru al‑ghāfirīn; waktub
lanā fī hādhihi‑d‑dunyā ḥasanah wa fī‑l‑ākhirah.
You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; You are the best
of forgivers. And write for us good in this world and in the Hereafter.
ʿAlā Allāhi tawakkalnā; rabbana lā tajʿalnā fitnatan lil‑qawmi al‑ẓālimīn; wa
najjinā bi‑raḥmatika mina al‑qawmi al‑kāfirīn.
Upon Allah we rely. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people,
and save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.
Rabbana ātinā min ladunka raḥmah wa hayyiʾ lanā min amrinā rashadā.
Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us right guidance in our
affair.
Rabbana āmannā fa‑ighfir lanā wa‑irḥamnā wa anta khayru ar‑rāḥimīn.
Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us; You are the
best of the merciful.
Rabbana iṣrif ʿannā ʿadhāba Jahannam; inna ʿadhābahā kāna gharāmā.
Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever
adhering.
Rabbana hab lanā min azwājinā wa dhurriyyātinā qurrata aʿyunin wajʿalnā lil‑muttaqīna
imāmā.
Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes,
and make us an example for the righteous.
Rabbana ighfir lanā wa li‑ikhwāninā alladhīna sabaqūnā bil‑īmān wa lā tajʿal fī
qulūbinā ghillan lilladhīna āmanū; rabbana innaka raʾūfun raḥīm.
Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put not in
our hearts any resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You
are Kind and Merciful.
Rabbana ʿalayka tawakkalnā wa ilayka anabnā wa ilayka al‑maṣīr; rabbana lā
tajʿalnā fitnatan lilladhīna kafarū wa‑ighfir lanā; rabbana innaka anta al‑ʿazīzu
al‑ḥakīm.
Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is
the destination. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve, and
forgive us. Our Lord, indeed You are the Mighty, the Wise.
O Allah, rectify for us our religion which is the safeguard of our affairs;
rectify for us our worldly life in which is our livelihood; and rectify for us
our Hereafter to which is our return. Make life an increase for us in every
good, and make death a relief for us from every evil.
Allāhumma innā nas’aluka al‑hudā wa at‑tuqā wa al‑ʿafāfa wa al‑ghinā.
O Allah, we ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and sufficiency.
fujā’ati niqmatika, wa jamīʿi sakhaṭik.
O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the removal of Your blessing, the change of
Your well‑being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all forms of Your
displeasure.
Allāhumma muṣarrif al‑qulūb ṣarrif qulūbanā ʿalā ṭāʿatik.
O Allah, Controller of the hearts, direct our hearts to Your obedience.
Allāhumma rabba Jibrā’īl wa Mīkā’īl wa Isrāfīl, fāṭira as‑samāwāti wa al‑arḍ,
ʿālima al‑ghaybi wa ash‑shahādah, anta taḥkumu bayna ʿibādika fīmā kānū fīhi
yakhtalifūn, ihdinā limā ukhtulifa fīhi mina al‑ḥaqq bi‑idhnik; innaka tahdī
man tashā’u ilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīm.
O Allah, Lord of Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the
earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You judge between Your servants
concerning that wherein they differ. Guide us, by Your permission, to the truth
regarding that over which people have differed; indeed, You guide whom You will
to a straight path.
O Allah, we seek refuge in You from severe trials, from falling into misery,
from evil destiny, and from the gloating of enemies.
aw ʿamal, wa nas’aluka an tajʿala kulla qaḍā’in qaḍaytahu lanā khayrā.
O Allah, we ask You for all good, immediate and delayed, what we know of it and
what we do not know; and we seek refuge in You from all evil, immediate and
delayed, what we know of it and what we do not know. O Allah, we ask You for
the good that Your servant and Prophet asked You for, and we seek refuge in You
from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, we
ask You for Paradise and for every word or deed that brings us near to it, and
we seek refuge in You from the Fire and from every word or deed that brings us
near to it. And we ask You to make every decree You decree for us good.
Allāhumma innaka ʿafuwwun tuḥibbu al‑ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannā.
O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon us.
Allāhumma innā nas’aluka ath‑thabāta fī al‑amr wa al‑ʿazīmata ʿalā ar‑rushd, wa
nas’aluka mujibāti raḥmatika wa ʿazā’ima maghfiratika, wa nas’aluka shukra
niʿmatika wa ḥusna ʿibādatik.
O Allah, we ask You for steadfastness in our affairs and determination upon
guidance. We ask You for the causes of Your mercy and the means of Your
forgiveness. We ask You for gratitude for Your blessings and excellence in
worshipping You.
Allāhumma ikfinā bi‑ḥalālika ʿan ḥarāmik, wa aghninā bi‑faḍlika ʿamman siwāk.
O Allah, suffice us with what You have made lawful so that we avoid what You
have made unlawful, and enrich us by Your bounty so that we need none besides
You.
hamminā wa lā mablagha ʿilminā; wa lā tusalliṭ ʿalaynā man lā yarḥamnā.
O Allah, apportion for us fear of You that will come between us and
disobedience to You; obedience to You that will bring us to Your Paradise; and
certainty that will make the calamities of this world easy upon us. Grant us enjoyment
of our hearing, our sight, and our strength as long as You keep us alive, and
make them the inheritors of us. Make our vengeance against those who wrong us,
and grant us victory over those who show enmity toward us. Do not make our
calamity in our religion, and do not make this world our greatest concern nor
the extent of our knowledge, and do not give power over us to those who will
not show us mercy.
wa naʿūdhu bika minka; lā nuḥṣī thanā’an ʿalayk; anta kamā athnayta ʿalā
nafsik.
O Allah, we seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your pardon
from Your punishment, and we seek refuge in You from You. We cannot enumerate
praise of You; You are as You have praised Yourself.
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīm
wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd; Allāhumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammad wa ʿalā
āli Muḥammad kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīm wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd
— wa sallim taslīman kathīrā.
O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You
sent prayers upon Abraham and the family of Abraham; indeed, You are
Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as
You blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious
— and grant abundant peace.
Refer to the verification of the aḥādīth that include these
supplications in the book Tabsīr al‑Nāsik bi‑Aḥkām al‑Manāsik ʿalā Ḍaw’ al‑Kitāb wa al‑Sunnah wa al‑Ma’thūr ʿan al‑Ṣaḥābah. The second‑to‑last supplication was
narrated by Abū Dāwūd (1427) from ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) with a
sound chain, in which it states: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say it at the end of his Witr.” The supplication that
begins with “O Allah, apportion for us fear of You…” was narrated by al‑Tirmidhī (3502) with a
good chain. And the ḥadīth, “O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love to pardon,
so pardon us,” was narrated by Aḥmad (25384) with a sound chain.
I ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, to accept from the Muslims their
fasting, their night prayers, and their supplications; to grant them success in
what pleases Him and draws them near to Him; and to guide them to His straight
path. Indeed, He is Hearing and Responsive.
May Allah send His prayers, peace, and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his companions.
